I’m not actually playing at this one, but I thought I’d give you the heads-up about a gig at the Carlton Club tonight (Thursday 31st January) that I’m involved with. We’ve got Lisa Redford, Samson and Delilah, Laienda (Bristol), and Paul Oska. It starts from 8pm tonight, is £3 on the door, and goes till 11.30pm…. Beer is £1.85 a pint and wine is £1.25 a glass. EXR Jam sessions in Chorlton

Hey - just a heads-up for all the musicians out there. EXR, who run a lot of gigs in Manchester, run a weekly jam session at the Lounge Bar, Wilbraham Road, Chorlton.

The session is acoustic - they have congas, djembes, bongos, tambourines etc set up as well as a bass amp and a good PA/mics etc. They’re also looking to get a good percussion section together - anyone can join in. Also acoustic artists and bands are welcome to come and do a short set/jam.

Really enjoyed playing the Winelight Club in Bury. Here’s a link to a review from Manchester Music (please click link to read full review - here’s a small excerpt - really chuffed to get such a good review:

Probably the star of the evening is TOM KERSWILL, a familiar face on the city circuit and very much a one man band. Tom’s energetic approach to his music finds him on cue with work boots, well worn jeans and maybe his favourite t-shirt. He’s casual in image but so absolutely meticulous when it comes to songwriting. His guitar style eschews finger picking for the best part, with his dynamic strums sometimes feverishly staggering between big chord crashes. The songs are perfectly trim and crammed with infectious, serious melodies. There’s not just one or two gems here but a whole string of tunes that hook you in to the observational lyrics as the set is interspersed with tales from the road and anecdotes about missed trains. “My Mind’s Eye” is one of Tom’s signature tunes and I for one hope that more people get to hear and see him play.

Not the Manchester International Festival

As Manchester International Festival (MIF) gets under way, there’s an alternative event happening, featuring tens of events across the next couple of weeks. It’s called Not the Manchester International Festival. Head to their official website for details of all events. One thing we’re getting involved in is a Songs for the Bath Tub on Tuesday, 10th July at Trof in the Northern Quarter. I’m playing there, together with Risa Hall, Feldspar and Ragz. There are a few good cheap places for bands and acoustic acts to stay when visiting Manchester. The following have been recommended to us:

Hatter’s / Hilton Chambers - Hostel in the Northern Quarter. Seems really clean and nice, with a good vibe.

The Manchester central Travelodge looks okay too - and is actually reasonably cheap.

The Lansdowne is also reasonable… and is situated near Fuel and Fallowfield Trof.

Yha Manchester is also well worth looking at…

Manchester International Festival - and an alternative

The Manchester International Festival runs from 28th June to 15th July in Manchester. It features a range of events, from dance, through art to Music.

Brand new this year is a completely unofficial, alternative fringe event. It hosts over 50 gigs, art exhibitions and other events. We’re running a special Songs for the Bath Tub event at Trof in the Northern Quarter. And I’m being interviewed and doing a live set on Manchester’s all fm on monday 9th July, 3-4pm.

Small World Festival 07

Small World Festival was lovely. Wet, but lovely. Saw some great sets, including music by Martha Tilstone and Carrie Tree. There are four music tents, with several smaller jamming spaces scattered in between. And everything’s solar-powered.

Everything went swimingly with the weather - until the Sunday, that is - when water actually began coming into our tent. However, we survived, and made it back to Manchester on the Monday… pictures of the festival will be up very soon!

Festival Season Underway…

Well, looks like the festival season is officially underway. Over the last weekend of April, All Tomorrow’s Parties took place. By all accounts, it was an excellent festival. Blog reports from the Indie Credential and Gill Rickson make me determined to actually try and make it next year - as long as it doesn’t clash with a future MahoneyFest

There’s some fantastic festivals to look forward to this summer, including Small World Festival (which is always lovely), Glastonbury (alas, no tickets ) and End of the Road Festival (new last year… rather late, in September)!

Appalachians

The Birmingham trip was great fun. On Saturday we went to a really impressive concert by Birmingham’s BEAST collective - a breathtaking sound extravaganza featuring 96 speakers – concert review here.

My own gig at the Sunflower Lounge was really great fun. There was a lot of good acoustic music on, and the venue is really special - and was packed full of people. Was great to catch up with the Birmingham lot too Looking forward to playing there again some time soon!

The Birmingham Beast

When I first heard about Birmingham University’s BEAST project in 2004, the prospect of going to see a “live” performance didn’t seem instantly appealing – high-fidelity sound played from laptops to an auditorium…. I thought it would be a bit like going to a hifi store and listening to some high-end sound systems.

I was pretty wrong about that. The BEAST performance in Birmingham on Saturday 3th May was impressive and, at times, breathtaking. 96 high-quality studio monitors of all shapes and sizes are used to create a massive sound field. Sound, originating from some computers running MaxDSP, is “diffused” around the room using a large number of mixing desks. The music ranged from sublime watery sounds to impressive electronic booms and whines that whizzed over your head and almost under your feet. It was a bit like listening to fireworks, except with sound, rather than vision.

The evening comprised a collection of pieces by various composers. We were there to see a new performance by electroacoustic composer Alexander J Harker, Orbits for piano and Max/MSP featuring Melissa Morris on piano. The piece relied heavily on improvisation, with a microphone which sampled the piano, and generate counter melodies and phrases. It was an unusual and beautiful performance - and as you’d imagine from BEAST’s high-end equipment, the quality of sound was absolutely fantastic. It was the first time I’d seen any of Harker’s pieces performed live – and was certainly a great introduction. I’m looking forward to hearing more!

Other pieces included an interpretation of Claude Lelouch’s C’etait un Rendezvous (click for YouTube video. The composer, Pete Stollery, undertook the same journey – this time on foot – and sampled audio from various locations along the way. scenes/rendez-vous was an incredibly detailed journey, and really enjoyable to listen to… the sounds of Paris flashed by in multiple directions, as if we’d all been picked up in a cage and carried through the city on foot.

It’s of an unknown demo with two tracks on it… God knows what that was then It could be “My Mind’s Eye”, which is currently my first track on my Myspace siteIt’s described as intriguing and (very) recommended. It’s been ages since I’ve played in Manchester, so I’m really pleased to be playing at the Tiger Lounge on Sunday, 21st Jan. Also playing are the excellent Midget and Giant! South by South West Festival 2007

Every year, thousands of bands, artists, film makers and record industry types descend on Austin, Texas, for the South by South West festival. Kind of like an even bigger version of Manchester’s in the city…

2007 dates are from 9th- 18th March. (Music part starts on 14th March)

Amazon Web Services Blog: S3 Infinidisk for EC2

Very interested in using S3 Infinidisk for EC2 to load in data on demand from S3. We use S3 as a backup for several big websites. Loading that into an EC2 backup server takes hours - so this solution might enable us to have an EC2 backup instance up and running in a few minutes, if we needed it.

Not sure about the lack of caching though — presume this means having to retrieve data from S3 each time it’s accessed, which is sloooow.

Back in Manchester

I’m back in Manchester after a good Christmas break in the South West, including a really good new year and a couple of trips to Taunton and Exeter, though I didn’t quite get as far as Totnes. It was good to get a bit of countryside… and now I’m looking forward to enjoying Manchester again. I’m playing over in Sale on February 20th (at the excellent AcousticAmp night) and we’re running the usual Songs for the Bath Tub nights on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays (at Trof) and Thursdays (at Fuel)… starting again 17th January!

And now for something a bit different. Whilst in New York, I took full advantage of the Tower Records closing down sale. It’s kinda sad when record stores close down — but at the same time, good. I was able to pick up quite a lot of interesting music.

One of my favourite CDs to have found was FM (Fantastia Remastered) by Cornelius. This features 8 remixes of artists including U.N.K.L.E and Damon Albarn. It’s a really chilled out CD to listen to, and takes you through a vista of different styles and genres. Very good listening material for the long journey from Manchester to Somerset on Thursday.

The Devil’s Interval

It’s been a while since adding any new music to this part of the site.. so a good place to start is with something a bit different. English folk group the Devil’s Interval are based in Newcastle - they’re a folk three-piece featuring Lauren McCormick, Jim Causley and Emily Portman. Well worth having a listen to some of their music!
