In the City, 2010

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

I’m starting to get excited about this year’s in the city. The Fugitive Motel blog have a really good preview of some of the artists playing at this year’s festival. I’m having a listen to that now, and beginning to plan out which acts to catch.

I’m excited to have a delegate pass this year, courtesy of All FM and Ursula Pabish’s Monday drivetime show on the station.

As always, it’ll be a mad rush trying to fit in as many talks and bands as possible!

Trof Northern Quarter open mic tonight

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

I’m running the Trof Northern Quarter open mic night in Manchester tonight, together with Ollie Smith. It kicks off at 8.30pm, and each slot is 3 songs long. Everybody’s welcome – it tends to be mainly musicians, but it’s usually pretty varied and we have occasional poets and comedians too. Slots often fill up by around about 9pm, so it’s worth getting down early if you can.

The Trof NQ open mic is every Sunday (except bank holidays). You can find out about other Manchester open mics elsewhere on the site!

New blog layout

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Hi everyone,

I’ve simplified the layout of the blog… Going to be re-designing it soon! Also added a couple of relevant advertising bits to the right… that’s mainly because certain parts of the site get loads of hits, for example the gig ticket swap page so it’s good to point people in the direction of sites that are more geared up to that! And then my really ancient article on getting a record cut.. I was asked to write that years ago, and have never actually cut a record myself yet…I get loads of enquiries about this, and most of the time I have to say “sorry, I don’t know” and then point people towards a vinyl cutting house!

Anyway… I’m going to be making the blog look better over the next few days – but for the time being, it’s simple, and has all the stuff on it, which is the main thing!

Featured Artist – Hannah Atkins

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

I’m intending to write a bit more about unsigned music on this blog over the coming weeks—especially focusing on unsigned acts in Manchester, and trying to tie in a bit with some of the stuff on our All FM Radio Show.

So let’s get things started with the first review:

Hannah Atkins – Falling

Manchester-based Atkins’ music is reminiscent of an early Imogen Heap (or Heap’s earlier band, Frau Frau). It’s got that really great mix of edgy but sweet-sounding synthesisers and live instruments and vocals.

The layers of sound are arranged intricately, but without overloading you with sound. There’s some really interesting stuff going on with samples and effects, but crucially these don’t get in the way of the lyrics or the vocals. In fact, the vocals soar above the arrangements. Underneath, synths meld with live violins and guitars – but the juxtoposition of studio wizardry and real-life instruments really works, and there’s a real feeling of space to the music.

It also reminded me of some tracks by (Manchester based) band Lamb – and they’re famed for their live performances. By the same token, live, in a big venue, Atkins’ music would really go down well. It’s not hard to imagine her playing venues such as Academy 2 or the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury, with a full complement of live musicians. In fact, though, the live shows I’ve seen so far involve just her.

And – for the moment at least – you can still catch her in smaller venues around Manchester. I recently saw her at the Iguana Bar in Chorlton, and was impressed by the live show – which was mainly performed using a stage piano. The live shows are great – I’d definitely recommend getting down to one if you can.

Her latest album, Falling, is available to buy online. It’s a beautifully-packaged in a tiny Fairtrade cloth bag.

EXR Jam sessions in Chorlton

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Hey – just a heads-up for all the musicians out there. EXR, who run a lot of gigs in Manchester, run a weekly jam session at the Lounge Bar, Wilbraham Road, Chorlton.

The session is acoustic – they have congas, djembes, bongos, tambourines etc set up as well as a bass amp and a good PA/mics etc. They’re also looking to get a good percussion section together – anyone can join in. Also acoustic artists and bands are welcome to come and do a short set/jam.

EXR are running an acoustic competition at the same time. For more details on all this see: http://exr.org.uk/

Open mic at Trof in the Northern Quarter, Manchester, every Sunday

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Update May 2009:

There’s an open mic night happening every Sunday at Trof in the Northern Quarter, and, together with Ollie Smith, I run it each week. It’s a really nice, chilled-but-busy open mic. We often get some well-known musicians coming down to try out stuff. Musicians who have dropped in include Karima Francis, Eskimo Cowboy, Nomad Jones, Paris Riots, Kirsty McGee & Mat Martin and even Guy Garvey (though the latter just came to check it out rater, than to play, sadly.)

We’ve got a Facebook Group for the open mic now too: Trof Northern Quarter Open Mic Facebook.

It starts 8.30pm each night (get there at 8pm to get a slot!). People play two or three songs each.

As with every open mic, check with the venue before travelling. It’s every Sunday except bank holidays, as a general rule…

Thanks Manchester Music people!
