New open mic at the Bay Horse tonight and every Tuesday

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Really excited to announce a new open mic every Tuesday at the Bay Horse, Northern Qt, Manchester.

The night will begin at 8.30pm… Three slots each. Just turn up and sign your name up to play. It’s in the area downstairs.

The Bay Horse is an excellent venue for gigs and open mics, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how this night turns out. Hopefully see you there later on this evening!

Trof Northern Quarter open mic

Trof Northern Quarter open mic

I’ve finished work on the Trof open mic videos at long last. There are videos of a total of 17 performances. Over the coming days I’ll highlight a few of them. First up we have: Aiden Cross, Danny Blockley and David Shafai. I’ll post three more performances in a few days.

Artists can embed videos in their own site by pressing the embed button on the video player. Let me know if the comments if you have any problems playing the videos.

You can also see an index page of all the performances from the open mic.

The last ever Sunday open mic at Trof Northern Quarter is tonight. After that it will be every Monday. We’re replacing the Trof NQ night with a new night — which you can also come to tonight. It’s at Bar One, Withington and starts at 8pm. This is the second ever open mic we’ve done there, so I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be running Bar One tonight and Ollie with be running Trof NQ. See you later…

Trof Northern Quarter open mic tonight

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

I’m running the Trof Northern Quarter open mic night in Manchester tonight, together with Ollie Smith. It kicks off at 8.30pm, and each slot is 3 songs long. Everybody’s welcome – it tends to be mainly musicians, but it’s usually pretty varied and we have occasional poets and comedians too. Slots often fill up by around about 9pm, so it’s worth getting down early if you can.

The Trof NQ open mic is every Sunday (except bank holidays). You can find out about other Manchester open mics elsewhere on the site!

Open mic at Trof in the Northern Quarter, Manchester, every Sunday

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Update May 2009:

There’s an open mic night happening every Sunday at Trof in the Northern Quarter, and, together with Ollie Smith, I run it each week. It’s a really nice, chilled-but-busy open mic. We often get some well-known musicians coming down to try out stuff. Musicians who have dropped in include Karima Francis, Eskimo Cowboy, Nomad Jones, Paris Riots, Kirsty McGee & Mat Martin and even Guy Garvey (though the latter just came to check it out rater, than to play, sadly.)

We’ve got a Facebook Group for the open mic now too: Trof Northern Quarter Open Mic Facebook.

It starts 8.30pm each night (get there at 8pm to get a slot!). People play two or three songs each.

As with every open mic, check with the venue before travelling. It’s every Sunday except bank holidays, as a general rule…

Not the Manchester International Festival

Friday, July 6th, 2007

As Manchester International Festival (MIF) gets under way, there’s an alternative event happening, featuring tens of events across the next couple of weeks. It’s called Not the Manchester International Festival. Head to their official website for details of all events. One thing we’re getting involved in is a Songs for the Bath Tub on Tuesday, 10th July at Trof in the Northern Quarter. I’m playing there, together with Risa Hall, Feldspar and Ragz. Will be a goodun!

The Castle, Oldham St

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Updated April 2009 The Castle closed for quite a few months last year, but has recently been bought up, renovated, and re-opened its doors. No word on any open mic as yet… here’s the page for the old Castle:

Sadly the Castle, Manchester, closed in 2008. The remaining bit of this post is kept for reference:

The Castle pub has a weekly open mic night on Mondays, run by Ollie Smith. It also has lots of other music going on throughout the week. It’s a small, initimate venue, with a few real ales – definitely slightly off the beaten track (a long way up Oldham St, beyond Dry Bar and Night and Day).
