Last night’s All Fm Unsigned Show was great fun. We had live sessions from North West-based bands The Portlands and Glass Ankle, plus loads of other music from Jon Kenzie, Passenger, Extra Love and loads of others. You can take a listen to the MixCloud copy of the programme below…

We’re presenting another Unsigned Show from 11pm-1am on Monday night. You can listen on 96.9FM in the Manchester area and on allfm.org
We have live sessions from Sam and the Bathroom Crooners, plus We are Willow – who are made up of Chris Butler from Butler Williams, and Kathryn Edwards.
So it’s going to be a great night of live music, and we’ll be fitting in as many of the best unsigned tracks as we can too…
Really excited to announce a new open mic every Tuesday at the Bay Horse, Northern Qt, Manchester.
The night will begin at 8.30pm… Three slots each. Just turn up and sign your name up to play. It’s in the area downstairs.
The Bay Horse is an excellent venue for gigs and open mics, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how this night turns out. Hopefully see you there later on this evening!
Really enjoyed doing the radio show on All FM last night with Danny. We managed to fit a lot of tracks in, and we had Manchester legends I Am Kloot playing live in the studio. We chatted to them about touring, their forthcoming album, and, well, lots of other random stuff.
For anybody who’s in the Bristol area tomorrow night, go down to the Prom on Wednesday. NYC-based Lisa Redford has returned to the UK and is doing a mini-tour. She’s on around 9.30pm.
Manchester band Anna Kashfi will be launching their new album, Survival
, at Fuel Cafe Bar in Withington tonight.
It’s a free show, and doors open 7.30/8pm. I’m really looking forward to the gig – it’s been a while since I’ve seen Anna Kashfi playing live, and it will be good to hear tracks from the new album.
Just a quick one – I’m playing at Contact Theatre, Manchester, 2pm today – as part of their Art Rumble event. It’s a free gig and there are art and craft stalls there too..
Loads more gigs to tell you about – will post another update later today….
Tony and the guys at the Urmston open mic / jam night, have mailed to say that the next open mic will take the form of a special “Recording Guitars” workshop — that’s at their next meeting on 15th December 09.
The organisers say:
We will bring both hardware and computer based recording systems, and give a tutorial covering the basics of multi-tracking with particular emphasis (of course) on recording acoustic guitars followed by a Q&A session. Let me know in advance if you have specific questions
I also hope to invite the local Roland/Boss Hi-Tec demonstrator Mark Hassall to bring some demo kit along (an hopefully do a feature spot with his current band “John The Dancer”) to illustrate what is available to suit a range of budgets (or that last minute Christmas present request?).
Anybody who wants to go along, can get in contact with them via their website.
I’ve not been to the night myself yet, but I’ve heard it’s pretty good..
Thanks to everyone who came to the Acoustic Eclectic gig in Stalybridge last night. Had a really, really good time. It’s a lovely atmosphere there, and a good place to play.
There was also an open mic session beforehand – players included Robin Mukherjee, Ed Turner, Jon Orpheus and Tony Ward.
On the subject of open mics in Lancashire, the Greater Manchester area, and further afield, I’ve just spotted an open mic in Todmorden, on Thursdays. It’s at a venue called Jack’s House. They’ve messaged me to say they’ve got new equipment, and will now record your performance for free. Slots are 15-20 minutes long. Might be worth checking out. Their next is tonight (Thursday 26th), from 8.30pm till 12am.
And, closer to Manchester, I’m now running an open mic at Bar One in Withington each Sunday. Last week’s was especially good, with a big turn out and a set from Nic Chapman (Hebden Bridge)…
And of course there’s the Trof NQ open mic in Manchester city centre each Monday.
Finally – don’t forget that Jon Gomm is playing this Friday, 27th November at Kro Bar. Also on the bill are Laienda (Bristol) and the Woe Betides (London / Birmingham). £4 in. It’s going to be a great night – can’t wait.
Acoustic Eclectic is a lovely acoustic night at the Q-Inn in Stalybridge. I’m playing there tomorrow evening (Wednesday, 25th November). It’s a free night (donations welcomed). There’s an open mic beforehand, and I’d really recommend it as a place to play. Lovely friendly, audience, nice beers – a good night!
This Friday at Kro Bar, we’re putting on some really excellent acts. We have Jon Gomm, the Woe Betides, Laienda, Lisa Marie Glover, I am Three, and I’ll be playing a couple of songs too:
It will be £4 in on the door, and get there for 7.30pm to see all the acts… Really looking forward to this one!
We’re running two open mics in Manchester each week. First of all, tonight and every Sunday it’s the Bar One open mic, in Withington. Ollie will be running that tonight (I’m doing sound for Jeremy Warmsley / Milk White Teeth at Kro Bar).
Then tomorrow night and every Monday it’s the open mic night at Trof in the Northern Quarter. I’ll be running this tomorrow. Be there around 8-8.30pm to get a slot!
Artists can embed videos in their own site by pressing the embed button on the video player. Let me know if the comments if you have any problems playing the videos.
You can also see an index page of all the performances from the open mic.
The last ever Sunday open mic at Trof Northern Quarter is tonight. After that it will be every Monday. We’re replacing the Trof NQ night with a new night — which you can also come to tonight. It’s at Bar One, Withington and starts at 8pm. This is the second ever open mic we’ve done there, so I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be running Bar One tonight and Ollie with be running Trof NQ. See you later…
Note (20th Jan 2010) Bar One has now closed down, sadly — check elsewhere on the site for other Manchester open mic nights.
We’re starting a new open mic, every Sunday from 8pm, in Bar One, Withington.
We’re aiming to keep the vibe similar to our Sunday open mic in Trof Northern Quarter, which sadly will be coming to an end on the last Sunday of October. (The Trof NQ night will then run each Monday from November onwards).
Would be great to see you at the Bar One open mic this Sunday (tomorrow). We’re aiming for everyone to be able to play three songs each, but since it’s a brand new open mic, there may well be room to do a few more than that on the first few Sundays.
Or for people nearer the centre of town, head down to Trof Northern Quarter tomorrow, for the last-but-one Trof NQ Sunday open mic!
If you’d like to play either open mic tomorrow, drop me a comment below, or else just turn up around 8pm…
You can join the Facebook group for info on the open mic at Trof NQ. And we’ll be setting up a group for the new Bar One open mic shortly too…
Just been asked to play a very last-minute gig at the Roadhouse in Manchester. I’m supporting Manchester electro band Bleachbaby and will be on stage 8pm…. tonight, Friday, 9th October… should be fun!
Because of the bank holiday, Trof Northern Quarter have cancelled the open mic night we usually do there tonight. It’ll be back on next week.
As a replacement, I’d recommend Uluru’s open mic (Chorlton). Run by Ricky Damiani, it kicks of at 7.30pm. I’ll be heading down there, and there will be a featured slot from Passenger, of Brighton — they’ll be doing a 45 minute set at 9.30pm. It’s all free of course, and should be a really good night.
This coming Saturday, there’s a free day of music at Jackson’s Boat — which is on the banks of the Mersey, near Sale Water Park. Some of the artists playing include Oniyama and the Sun Collective, Jason Dunkley and That Girl Sue, Zacc Rogers, Passenger, Alexis McLean, and me (Tom Kerswill). It’s free, but charity donations are welcome! Not sure exactly when everybody will be on yet… but their website advertises music as being in the evening – I’m thinking things will be starting around 6pm but will keep you posted!
Here are the address and contact details for the pub:

There’s a gig tonight, Tues 18th Aug, 8pm, at Trof in the Northern Quarter. In order of appearance:
The Jade Assembly
It should be a fun gig. George is best known for being the “Guitar George” that Mark Knopfler refers to in Dire Straits’ song “Money For Nothing”
Door price is £3 (£2 with NUS). I’m really looking forward to it. I’m normally one of the people organising music there, or hiding behind the sound desk so it’ll be a nice change to be in front of the mic!
MONSTERS BUILD MEAN ROBOTS
“Echoes of Sigur Ros and Explosions in the sky” – Artrocker
FUEL CAFE, 8PM, FREE IN.
If you like loud pounding guitars, thom yorke style electronica, and beautiful soundscapes a la Mogwai, Sigur Ros…you must not miss this gig from Brighton 4 piece MBMR
Take a chance to hear something new. something exciting.. and go away having seen your favourite new band.
With support from…
THE WOE BETIDES
Pop duo championed by Jeremy Warmsley!
“There’s something dark and brooding about The Woe Betides… sweet, fast-paced chorus, heavy guitars and almost New Romantic-esque vocals. Not too shabby at all!” (Stool Pigeon)
“Conor Oberst may have competition!” Sandman
It’s part of the Spinningfields Summer Festival, and it takes place in the Kro Bar there. He’s had some great acs, including the Bee’s Niece and Pablo’s Finest Hour (who both played at the launch night), and then a set by I am Three last week.
It’s well worth checking the night out. The next is on Wednesday, 5th August, from 5pm till pm. It features The Thingumajigs and the Hatstand Medicine Band. And it’s completely free.
I’m running the Trof Northern Quarter open mic night in Manchester tonight, together with Ollie Smith. It kicks off at 8.30pm, and each slot is 3 songs long. Everybody’s welcome – it tends to be mainly musicians, but it’s usually pretty varied and we have occasional poets and comedians too. Slots often fill up by around about 9pm, so it’s worth getting down early if you can.
The Trof NQ open mic is every Sunday (except bank holidays). You can find out about other Manchester open mics elsewhere on the site!
