Lots of Manchester gigs and open mics

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

I’m currently waiting in a van, helping my brother move house… so just time for a very quick blog update. First thanks to everyone who came to Kro on Friday – it was a really good night, with excellent sets by Jon Gomm, I Am Three, Laienda, The Woe Betides and Lisa-Marie Glover. Was good to be involved with promoting a night again.

It’s the Bar One open mic tonight. As always, pints are two quid all night. Ollie will be running things this time. It runs from 8.30pm till late every Sunday.

Note (20th Jan 2010) Bar One has now closed down, sadly — check elsewhere on the site for other Manchester open mic nights

And I’ll be running the open mic at Trof Northern Quarter tomorrow night (Monday)…

See you soon,

Tom

Stalybridge Acoustic Eclectic, and a new open mic in Todmorden

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Thanks to everyone who came to the Acoustic Eclectic gig in Stalybridge last night. Had a really, really good time. It’s a lovely atmosphere there, and a good place to play.

There was also an open mic session beforehand – players included Robin Mukherjee, Ed Turner, Jon Orpheus and Tony Ward.

On the subject of open mics in Lancashire, the Greater Manchester area, and further afield, I’ve just spotted an open mic in Todmorden, on Thursdays. It’s at a venue called Jack’s House. They’ve messaged me to say they’ve got new equipment, and will now record your performance for free. Slots are 15-20 minutes long. Might be worth checking out. Their next is tonight (Thursday 26th), from 8.30pm till 12am.

And, closer to Manchester, I’m now running an open mic at Bar One in Withington each Sunday. Last week’s was especially good, with a big turn out and a set from Nic Chapman (Hebden Bridge)…

And of course there’s the Trof NQ open mic in Manchester city centre each Monday.

Finally – don’t forget that Jon Gomm is playing this Friday, 27th November at Kro Bar. Also on the bill are Laienda (Bristol) and the Woe Betides (London / Birmingham). £4 in. It’s going to be a great night – can’t wait.

Acoustic Eclectic with Tom Kerswill - Wed 25th Nov

Acoustic Eclectic with Tom Kerswill - Wed 25th Nov

Acoustic Eclectic is a lovely acoustic night at the Q-Inn in Stalybridge. I’m playing there tomorrow evening (Wednesday, 25th November). It’s a free night (donations welcomed). There’s an open mic beforehand, and I’d really recommend it as a place to play. Lovely friendly, audience, nice beers – a good night!

You can add yourself to the Facebook event or head over to the acoustic eclectic myspace page.

Chorlton Arts Festival launch event is on 26th November

Chorlton Arts Festival

Chorlton Arts Festival

The Chorlton Arts Festival is having its launch party on Thursday, 26th November, 8pm, at the Lloyds Hotel in Chorlton. The festival itself is in May 2010. The launch event is open to all promoters / musicians / music industry people who’d like to be involved. There will be application packs available there. Fiona Stewart, festival organiser, says:

Please feel free to pass the flyer on to anyone you know who may be interested in getting involved, we would love to see them there. The launch party is an opportunity for visual/performance artists, venues and volunteers to find out more about the festival by meeting members of the team, picking up an application pack and asking questions. There’s also a jazz band and food.

The launch event is usually pretty fun – so it’s well worth going to if you have an interest in getting involved with the festival.

Recommended live music nights at Oddest and Bar One tonight, plus Fuel and Trof Northern Qt tomorrow

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

I’m just on the train back from a really good trip – first to Oslo for a couple of days, and then to Edinburgh. Will hopefully have time to write about both in the next few days.

Back in Manchester, there are some excellent gigs happening over the next few days. Tonight (Sunday), Jo Rose, Dan Melrose, Pablo’s Finest Hour, Noon and Jack Frazer are all playing at Oddest – the night’s called “With a Little Help” and it’s in support of a music therapy charity.

There’s also the open mic night at Bar One, Withington – being run by Josh tonight.

Tomorrow, The Miserable Rich are playing at Fuel (Red Deer Club). Plus there’s the newly-moved Monday open mic at Trof Northern Quarter, from 8pm till late – hosted by Ollie. Finally, I’ll be presenting some of the Unsigned Show on All Fm, with Danny (I’ll be standing in for Rob). The show’s from 11pm-1am, and I’ll be there in the studio from 11.45pm (after packing up the equipment from the Miserable Rich gig). I’ll be back on the show the following week, when we’ll have Ricky Damiani doing a live session.

See you soon,

Tom

First Monday open mic at Trof NQ

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

It’s the first ever Monday open mic at Trof NQ tonight (from 8.30pm). I’m really looking forward to it…

Apart from the change of day, it’s going to be very similar in format to the old Sunday open mic at Trof. So, three songs each, and anything goes!

Two open mics in two days

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Hi everyone,

We’re running two open mics in Manchester each week. First of all, tonight and every Sunday it’s the Bar One open mic, in Withington. Ollie will be running that tonight (I’m doing sound for Jeremy Warmsley / Milk White Teeth at Kro Bar).

Then tomorrow night and every Monday it’s the open mic night at Trof in the Northern Quarter. I’ll be running this tomorrow. Be there around 8-8.30pm to get a slot!
