It’s the Midem music industry festival this week. As always, loads of upcoming bands playing, some good, some not! Anybody got any feedback on the festival so far?

Hey! I’m really looking forward to playing the Pilgrim on Tuesday. Here’s the flier… I’m not quite sure where they’re going with the slogan, but there we go!

Update: The Pilgrim also has an open mic night. And I’ve written a guide to open mic nights in Liverpool – so head there for more information.

Manchester review

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Was really chuffed to get this review from Manchester Music. It’s of an unknown demo with two tracks on it… God knows what that was then 🙂 It could be “My Mind’s Eye”, which is currently my first track on my Myspace siteIt’s described as intriguing and (very) recommended. Thanks Manchester Music people!

A Manchester gig!

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

It’s been ages since I’ve played in Manchester, so I’m really pleased to be playing at the Tiger Lounge on Sunday, 21st Jan. Also playing are the excellent Midget and Giant! It’ll kick off around 8pm. Tiger Lounge is hidden away on Cooper St, near St. Peter’s Square. You can find loads more info about the event here: Manchester Acoustic Sunday, Tiger Lounge.

South by South West Festival 2007

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Every year, thousands of bands, artists, film makers and record industry types descend on Austin, Texas, for the South by South West festival. Kind of like an even bigger version of Manchester’s in the city

2007 dates are from 9th- 18th March. (Music part starts on 14th March)
Official SXSW site is available here.

Sometimes These Words (Lyrics)

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Hi… I’m posting the lyrics to Sometimes these words because a few people have asked for them. Thanks for liking it!

Sometimes these Words

Sometimes these words,
Lose their meaning,
And the the sound of your voice,
Has got me dreaming,
It’s all I hear now,
And it’s all,
Lie here now,

Coz I need the stars to guide me
To follow myself
You swallowed everything
Became someone else

My daydreams took me
Across the grass
And your eyes weren’t focussed,
You’d had a laugh
Little one, you think you’re flying
But you’re on my shoulders, age of nine
And daydreams trick me,
All the time,
I thought you’d never
Learn to cry

And everyone else will walk away
You are not yourself
I’m angry at you,
Coz you don’t care
You’re mean to yourself

I wake up sometimes
But you’re still asleep
Dream of sunrise
And all is sweet,
Little one,
Don’t give up
On breathing slowly,
On growing up

Janey’s eyes are glistening,
Crying with the beauty of it all,
But her beauty hides
Behind wide eyes
And I’m tired of this all

Amazon Web Services Blog: S3 Infinidisk for EC2

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Very interested in using S3 Infinidisk for EC2 to load in data on demand from S3. We use S3 as a backup for several big websites. Loading that into an EC2 backup server takes hours – so this solution might enable us to have an EC2 backup instance up and running in a few minutes, if we needed it.

Not sure about the lack of caching though — presume this means having to retrieve data from S3 each time it’s accessed, which is sloooow.

Back in Manchester

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

I’m back in Manchester after a good Christmas break in the South West, including a really good new year and a couple of trips to Taunton and Exeter, though I didn’t quite get as far as Totnes. It was good to get a bit of countryside… and now I’m looking forward to enjoying Manchester again. I’m playing over in Sale on February 20th (at the excellent AcousticAmp night) and we’re running the usual Songs for the Bath Tub nights on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays (at Trof) and Thursdays (at Fuel)… starting again 17th January!
