Wow, had a really good evening last night. It was cool - big bus went from Dartington to Exeter, then took us back at the end of the evening. Nice to be able to just relax and watch some good music. A good night was had by all. Though I think I drank a little bit too much beer!
And when the bus got back at 1.30am we headed to a party. All I had left in my fridge was a bottle of champagne so I took that…. d’oh, I’d been saving that! Ah well, it was nice champagne anyway…
Today had a really great time just doing some songs with Laura. I think I might actually try and get her to come along to one of my gigs and do some harmonies. Especially on Amber Smile, which was sounding v. nice!
This evening I had a choice between either going to Jelly Jazz in Plymouth, or going to a party at Dartington apparently with a sound system from Plymouth. In the end I did neither, instead staying at home and playing guitar the whole evening. Which was a good choice I think. I’ve got this song that I’ve almost finished writing. I sang it at the top of my voice for about an hour I think… luckilly my neighbour is a musician too (from the “funky monks”) and so doesn’t mind - often hear him singing at the top of his voice too.
I really just need to fire up the computer and record all these things…. at the moment I seem to be doing loads of writing and not ever get round to the nitty-gritty of recording. Though there is quite a lot of stuff that will be up on the web soon - my rough recording of new song Amber Smile plus a load of pretty exciting stuff done in connection with Tunerise which we’re hoping to launch as a mini EP hopefully around mid March. I’ll keep you posted!
I’m planning to go to the Sziget (aka “Pepsi Island”) Festival this year. Festival dates are: 10th-17th August 2005. The festival looks incredible. More info here. It will also be a good fallback if the whole Glastonbury thing doesn’t happen.
Acutally, on that note, the Roskilde festival, which often clashes with Glastonbury, is actually on a week after it. So it’s going to be possible to go to both. That would be really great. Both festivals are considering my demo at the moment!
The Gentlemen Rebels - a really cool fusion of I don’t know what (funk, hip-hop, soul???) are playing at the Exeter Cavern tomorrow (Tuesday 22nd). The show goes on until 1am and I reckon it’s going to be pretty cool! There’s a load of other bands playing too - organised by Lone Shark. Might see you there!
Sitting listening to Idlewild’s 100 Broken Windows, I’ve suddenly realised how unbelievably pretentious their lyrics are. Worthy of a theatre project from Dartington college
Having said that, their songs are still fantastic - especially the last track on that album “The Bronze Medal”.
This one’s just a slot at the open mic night, but it’s a great venue and is always a good night, so I thought I’d add it to the gig list anyway. Entry is free, and you’ll find a wide range of performers, all doing a 15-minute slot. It runs on till 1am too - so should be a good night.
Had a really good jam with the guitarist, bass player and drummer from Substation today in Plymouth. It was great fun to be playing keyboards again… dug out my old analogue module and made some hammond-like sounds! I’m going back tomorrow to work on some of my songs with the drummer and bassists. Am quite looking forward to it!
On a completely different note, for some reason I tuned into Jo Wylie’s show on Radio 1 to hear Daniel Bedingfield playing live. Now I’m normally not a big fan - I was wondering only the other day how he managed to become so well-known. But after listening to the live set I’ve realised that he’s actually really good - a very good live performer with a great band. I had no idea!
The annual event for electronic musicians, producers and DJs is to be held on the 14th-16th April 2005. More info can be found here: Sounds Expo

Dartington Plus are hosting another music symposium on the 25-30th April 2005, following on from the success of last year’s. It’s called South West Sound.
It will be a six-day event, taking in a wide range of different genres. This includes day 1 - World and Folk music, and day 5 - rock, pop and dance music. Last year’s event was excellent - there was a range of useful workshops, and opportunities to talk to people who’ve been involved in the industry.
It promises to be a really useful event. More details are Here
