Open mic at Trof in the Northern Quarter, Manchester, every Sunday

Update May 2009:
There’s an open mic night happening every Sunday at Trof in the Northern Quarter, and, together with Ollie Smith, I run it each week. It’s a really nice, chilled-but-busy open mic. We often get some well-known musicians coming down to try out stuff. Musicians who have dropped in include Karima Francis, Eskimo Cowboy, Nomad Jones, Paris Riots, Kirsty McGee & Mat Martin and even Guy Garvey (though the latter just came to check it out rater, than to play, sadly.)
We’ve got a Facebook Group for the open mic now too: Trof Northern Quarter Open Mic Facebook.
It starts 8.30pm each night (get there at 8pm to get a slot!). People play two or three songs each.
As with every open mic, check with the venue before travelling. It’s every Sunday except bank holidays, as a general rule…

Hey Tom,
I’d love to play at the next Open Mic night, is there one on 19th August? My myspace site hasn’t been updated for a while and I’ve got some new stuff I want to try out.
Thanks for your help

Hi Alex! Yes, there is! I won’t be here… but Andy Hughes will be running it. We’ve actually switched to doing it *every* Sunday now…

Hi Tom
Do we need to book a spot on Sundays, or can we just turn up? If so, what sort of time?
Thanks
Rich

Hi Tom
I would like your help!
I would like to bring SPELLBIND from Germany to play in Manchester.
Spellbind, an up-and-coming German band, is touring Europe in Autumn 2007.
Their Indie Music is a mix between Coldplay and Smashing Pumpkins.
They have just reached the Finals of Germany’s National Rockband Contest!
As part of their tour, Spellbind wishes to play in Manchester.
Spellbind write and perform their songs in English:
http://www.spellbind.de/ (click onto Left-Hand Bottom Corner to play their latest hits)
http://www.myspace.com/Spellbindmusic
Spellbind have already booked flights 25th Oct – 28th Oct to fly into Manchester.
If there is a possibility for Spellbind to play, or to support any of your other bands during these days, please let me know!
They would require a Sound System (Spellbind would bring their own instruments).
I would be willing to help out with promotion and contacts to radio stations etc.
If you require further details, then please do not hesitate to contact me!
Thankyou so much
Best regards

Hi Tom,
Is there an open mic night on at Trof in the Northern Quarter, this sunday.
The 21st and if so can you just turn up and play?
Richie
Tom
Hi Richie – actually…. good job you asked, but this weekend there isn’t. Every other weekend there is. The reason is that it’ll be the In the City festival and Trof in the Northern Quarter is involved in that… actually we’re running showcase gigs from 2pm-4pm on the Saturday and from 5pm-7pm on the Sunday…
Any other weekend is open mic though – turn up 8pm for 8.30 on the Sunday…

Mike
Hi, I wish to perform at the open mic on 4 Nov. Is it open to comedians? The staff at Trof seemed to think I needed to give advanced notice rather than just turning up on the night. Judging from your previous comment, I need to be there 8pm for an 8-30 start.
Tom
Hi Mike – yes, it’s predominantly a music night, but we are open to comedians too… It’s only a 10 minute slot each, but if that’s cool then we’re up for it…
If you arrive to sign up from 8, that’s fine… then we kick things off with the first performer at 8.30pm
It’s worth just double-checking with the venue before making the trip, on the day – they did cancel on us last night without telling me… but that’s the first time it’s happened. So worth just a quick call to them. It’s a fun open mic though and well worth doing!
Also – note that some people have got confused because there are two Trofs in Manchester – this one is Trof in the Northern Quarter!

Hi Tom
We’d like to play on Sunday 25th November – shall we just turn up from 8pm to sign up?
Ta, Matt

Hi Matt,
Yes, that should be fine… It’s worth calling the venue the day before just to double-check everything’s running, but it certainly should be. See you there!

Hello Tom,
I have just been down to Trof in the Nortern Quarter and they suggested I contact you. I and 3 friends are thinking of coming down to the open mike night on sunday (13 Jan). We have an acoustic type band and fancy getting some experience of playing live. Before I drag everyone down to Thomas street, I thought i would check 1. That it is happening on sunday. 2. that we will get a space to play. 3. how many songs is max/min? 4. Will there be space for 4 of us? any gear we need to bring apart from our instruments?
I would appreciate a call just to talk it through on 07799 118 774. Thanks. Dominic

Hi,
I would like to play at an your open mike night. I have recenly joined a duo and we do mainly pop music. I am a female singer and the other member of the duo plays acoustic guitar? Would this be acceptable as at a lot of open mike nights they don’t like pop music. Please can you let me know? We do a cover of Oasis Live Forever and Wiseman by James blunt as well but I have a pop voice so it doesn’t sound rocky. Let me know please.
Tom Kerswill
Hey Kathy! Yes, it’s every Sunday (except bank holidays) and sign-up is 8pm. We’re up for any kind of music, including pop music! We really encourage original stuff, so if you have one original track to play, that would be great. If you have an interesting take on any covers, then that’s fine too! Would be good to see you there…
