Seth Lakeman

South West folk musician Seth lakeman has been nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music awards. Fantastic news for music in the South West. All his albums are put out on his own label, and legend has it his latest album, Kitty Jay, was recorded for £300. I’m not sure I believe that, having listened to it! It’s recorded in a really natural way – close your eyes and you might even believe he’s playing in your front room.

Kitty Jay is a beautiful mix of songs inspired by Dartmoor. Highly recommended.

Seth Lakeman is also a must-see live. I caught him playing at the Exeter Phoenix a couple of weeks ago with the Levellers, and he can often be found just playing in local folk clubs round here. Though that might change with the Mercury Music prize nomination. Catch him while you can!

  • Yeah, I have to agree with you about Seth Lakeman, I got a few of his songs and I really like them. He might pull off a “Kathryn Williams” like she did so nearly did a few years back!

Ah I hope so — must be great publicity being nominated for the Mercuries. Though I’ve yet to hear any of it on the radio!
