Open Mic Nights in Manchester

March 14th, 2006

Current open mics in Manchester (updated November 2008)

Here’s a list of many of the open mic nights happening in and around Manchester, UK. Please drop us a comment if you spot any ones not on this list, or ones that are no longer operating. Goes without saying, but do remember to always phone the venue before heading out to make sure it’s on - and make sure you’ve got the right venue (there are two different Trof venues listed below, for example!)

  • Open Mic: Castle, Oldham St Every Monday. Small, friendly night, with a leaking roof!
  • Open Mic: M19 bar, Levenshulme Every Monday evening
  • Open mic - original: Blue Cat CafĂ© Mondays 8pm
  • Open mic: The Bank Sale (each Monday, we think!)
  • Jam night: Bar 480, Chorlton from 8pm every Tuesday - 1 song each

  • Open mic at Eighth Day, Oxford Road, every Friday. Run by the people behind Black Dog

  • Open Mic: Station Pub, Warrington Street, Ashton-u-Lyne. This is a monthly event on a Saturday Night Everyone is very welcome. Check out www.myspace.com/christinaacoustic for dates.
  • Open mic: Trof in the Northern Quarter Every Sunday - a good audience and room for 3 songs.. from 8pm.
  • Open mic:Sunday afternoon / evening - One Lounge, Chorlton. Also hosting an acoustic competition right now.
  • Sunday afternoon, 3pm-6pm Revise Bar, Chorlton This has moved later, to Sunday evening (8pm onwards). Not sure if it’s still hapenning, after a bit of juggling round at the venue, so definitely call before traveling
  • Songwriter night Astley Arms, Dukinfield last Sunday of each month

Please check with the venue before making the trip, to make sure the night is actually on…. and drop me a line or a comment if you discover that a night has changed before I do!

Arch Bar open mic is actually on Wednesdays - wrong info when I phoned them up ;-) The jam night on Tuesdays is pretty good though…

Good to see someone has finally started posting Open Mic info. I’ve been searching and have found nothing. Any idea how busy these open mics are, and a good time to show up to them? I figure arrive half hour early?

    Hi Travis,

Cheers for the comment! I haven’t actually been to all of the ones I’ve mentioned yet… but you’re right, there really isn’t very much info on the net at all. The only way I’ve found them is just stumbling on websites. I’m planning on heading to Iguanna bar tonight (quite popular that one I think), and then Arch bar on Wednesday.

Cool, cheers for that… I’ve added it to the list

Every other wednesday (next one 16th Nov) downstairs at the bay horse in the northern quarter. A very good diverse selection of musicians and you get a free pint for playing.

  • 8. Tom  |  November 4th, 2005 at 1:12 pm

Thanks for that - added it….

I played last night at the open mic night at pleasure in withington, definatly worth checking out, some diverse original musicians there, intimate with a good atmosphere! there’s an open mic night at Q bar in stalybridge too (if its still going) on mondays, bit of a track outside manchester I know! But a really cool little venue, relaxed atmospere and they also have a great selection of ales :-)

  • 13. Tom  |  December 7th, 2005 at 12:13 am

Cheers Becky - yeah Pleasure is a good one. I also discovered one in Hulme the other day… arghh, can’t remember what it’s called now but it’s every other Thursday. Quite near the Arch…

  • 14. Manu  |  December 20th, 2005 at 1:43 pm

    Hi Tom,

I am a singer-songwriter from Bath who is moving to Manchester in the new year. I have an album and video coming out in Feb and I am looking to hit the Manchester scene pretty hard to get myself known. I saw your site online and thought it would be a good starting point.

I don’t have a place to live yet (looking to move in with ‘like minded’s’) but I would like to know of any good open mics in the centre of Manchester, as well as good floorspots where I can get paid.

If you have any good ideas, I’d love to hear from you,

Also, check out my music on http://www.myspace.com/manud

    Manu.

  • 15. Charlotte  |  January 9th, 2006 at 11:28 pm

hey - im a singer-songwriter, ive done buskers nights and gigs before but ive never actually done an open mic night - can someone help me out - do you just turn up on the night and play or do u need to sign up before or something? Sorry know its a stupid question but i dont know!!

  • 16. Tom  |  January 10th, 2006 at 1:16 am

    Hey Charlotte

Buskers nights are the same as open mics really… just turn up and play! This applies to all the above open mics… as long as you turn up early enough!

It’s often worth giving the venue a call beforehand to make sure the night is actually running!

  • 17. Bernard  |  January 26th, 2006 at 7:20 pm

Try The Thirsty Scholar on a thursday. Been THere a few times, treated me really well. It goes on late too. The guy always tries his best to get you on too but you’ll def be able to play if you arrive around 8.30. Nice crowd and free in.

  • 18. Tom  |  January 27th, 2006 at 2:31 am

Hi Bernard! Thanks for that info… yes, the scholar is a great night. Usually packed - noisy but very good fun!

  • 19. TOm (scarbrough)  |  January 28th, 2006 at 8:25 pm

THanks this is usefull. Ive been here 6 months and havenot found anywhere which is still running.

Manchester must be the only place in BRitain not to promote the local music scene if it does not involve some over rated over paid radio 1 backed ’superstar’.

Scarboro has two o/m nights every day of the week , as do lots of places, why is Mcr so crap?

We should all get together and start one up.

But until then ill go to the thirsy Scholar

    :)

  • 20. Tom  |  January 29th, 2006 at 8:46 pm

Hi Tom… no, I reckon Manchester’s got a fantastic scene. It’s just that none of these nights are very well publicised yet. Once you start going to them, you quickly discover others! And then there’s good live music to watch most days - like at Night and Day, Roadhouse, etc…

  • 21. Jon  |  February 9th, 2006 at 3:59 am

Hello People. Just to let you all know that the next open mic nights at The Bayhorse are Wed 15th Feb, 29th Feb and every fortnight. The 15th will be a marker for this night as it’s 6 months since we started. Everyone is welcome, starts at 8pm. I’ll look forward to seeing you all. For more info please e-mail us at yourmusic@hotmail.co.uk Regards -Jon (Sound Technician)

  • 22. Jon  |  February 10th, 2006 at 5:09 am

Actually Wed 15th Feb & Wed 1st March as feb only has 28 days… My apologies :-)

  • 23. Tom  |  February 10th, 2006 at 9:11 am

Heheh — cheers for that Jon. That’s good because I’m never sure when the Bay Horse open mic is!

  • 24. Andy  |  February 20th, 2006 at 1:54 pm

    Hi

Cheers for putting this list of open mic nights together, a valuble resource, i guess i’m between gigs at the moment, mainly because its taking me ages to put my new demo together and get it distributed, so open mic is a great way to reach people and to keep live practice ticking over,

Hope you wouldnt mind if i post this list to my myspace blog?

    Cheers

    Andy

  • 25. Tom  |  February 21st, 2006 at 1:19 am

By all means - go for it. Could you put a link to this original post too though - and drop me a line with your blog address?

  • 26. phil  |  February 27th, 2006 at 2:17 pm

Hi Tom There is a good open-mike night at the bakers vault stockport every second thursday of every month.
Also there is one this thursday march 2nd at the ashers social club in moston near moston mancat.
anyone who needs more info or directions phone me on 07901886834.
There is also a local songwriters forum which has started a radio station for songwriters to get there music played.
The best way to get to it is go on google write manchester songwriters, scroll down till you see Darren Poyzer,on his site click community, then click stereo graffiti discussion forum.
It is a good songwriters site, keeps you informed about open-mike gigs.
    see you soon phil.

Hey, just to let you know that a new open mic night has started at the cavendish pub in hulme. Just before the Arch bar on Stretford road. Cheap drinks, late license and good atmosphere. Anyone can play, open to poetry, comedy, anything you can think of. Check out the website for more details of the venue. Hope to see you guys down sometime soon. Cheers

  • 29. mark  |  March 6th, 2006 at 7:30 pm

  • 31. Vickytoria  |  March 14th, 2006 at 5:53 pm

Tom, this is great! I’ve been looking to play in Manchester for a while now. I play flute in a few bands in Burnley, Nelson and Colne. I like to call it rock flute. ish!! My question to you is as a fluetest I like to play with other people and can play with anybody so long as I am aware of the key it is played in…Improvisation is my forte…At any of these open mics will people be willing for me to come and jam along with their tunes and basically just improvise along with them or is it strctly “this is my set, please don’t gate crash it!”
It would be great to get my face round Manchester as i believe flute isn’t just a classical instrument and can be used for many effects…..Be great to hear from ya with a response…
    Thank you

    Vickytoria

  • 32. Tom  |  March 14th, 2006 at 11:47 pm

    Hey Vickytoria!

Cheers for the message… hmmm, depends on the night, but one that’s really great is at Pleasure on a Monday, because it turns into a jam. So it’d be a pretty good one from the point of view of a flautist.

Anyway - if you’d like to come along and play on any of my songs at any of the nights, you’d be more than welcome!

    Tom

  • 33. Gemma  |  March 30th, 2006 at 3:53 pm

Also bar Xs in fallowfield and The oxford are looking for bands to play, just hand in a demo and they’ll let you know!

Hope this is useful information for everyone!

    Take care

    Hi Tom

I just recently started to go to jams, i started going to Dr Livvey’s which i enjoyed, I turned up on Sunday, but it was cancelled , Gutted !! they have put it on hold now, it will probably be once a month….

I thought the resident band , were brilliant , not sure if they had a name for the band, but i think the drummer is Mike Wilson, and a bass player called Don…the band very welcoming and supportive, to newcomers like myself.

    Shame it’s cancelled..

I really enjoy , jazz/blues which vuenues would you reccommend, i’m a vocalist and play the Alto sax, well trying to play it , ha.
    Caroline Morgan

  • 41. Tom  |  June 28th, 2006 at 2:54 am

Ah - hadn’t heard of Dr. Livvey’s at all! Is it in town? Did you mean venues to play a gig at, or to do open mics? Pleasure is always really good for jams… and of course Matt and Phred’s does its Jazz Jam on a Monday which is excellent to watch (I’m no where near jazzy enough to play!)

  • 42. frank  |  July 4th, 2006 at 4:38 pm

hi tom, ima 41 yr old “singing virgin” so to speak. i am absolutely dying to get up in front of a crowd and sing, only wanted to do it for about 26 yrs.
question i have is do u know anywhere that is lets say patient (for want of a better word) to somebody that is very willing but also very terrified to actually sing a song or 2 with probably nothin more than his his guitar.
i live in warrington but willing to travel to manchester for the chance.
would be greatfull for any info u can provide.
    cheers. frank

  • 43. Tom  |  July 4th, 2006 at 6:31 pm

    Hi Frank,

Hmmm… so you want somewhere with quite a nice crowd? I think the best for that would be the Blue Cat, in Stockport… Everyone’s quiet and respectful, and willing to hear new music, etc. It’ll be fine!

Try that one… I’ll have a think about others and get back to you! Good luck, maybe see you down there at some point!

    Tom

  • 44. ed  |  July 27th, 2006 at 12:06 pm

Hi Tom, this is a really useful site, well done.
Can I just mention that there is an open mic night at The Bank at Sale every other Monday? It’s quite bluesy but anyone can get up and play, and they’re very friendly. Ta!

  • 46. Gemma  |  August 19th, 2006 at 5:19 pm

    Hello!
We are starting a regular open mic night at Fuel in Withington…the first one will be this Thursday 24th August and they will run every-other Thursday from then, so the second will be on Thursday 7th September. It will start at 8ish x

    Edit from Tom:

After talking to Fuel, the night will now be 2nd and 4th Thursday I think - so as not to clash with Songs for the Bath Tub

I’ve not found any that have a piano - None of the ones I go to regularly do. But often people will bring stage pianos along - so it’s just a question of finding out if one will be there I guess… You could try asking on the forums at http://songsforthebathtub.co.uk

    Hey Ian

Sorry - only just got to this! That’s fantastic news - glad you’ve found it useful. The Castle is really good, and friendly. I’ve passed on your email to Andy who runs it - he’ll be able to confirm it’s on, etc.

Sale — I don’t know of any open mics, but the Bar Amp is an excellent place for acoustic music (Tuesdays) and it’s worth dropping down and talking to them. Iguanna Bar in Chorlton, which I guess is fairly near, is a good bet.

Let me know if you do find anything in Sale!

Ian - found somewhere that does an open mic in Sale… a place called The Bank, each Monday… worth Googling some more info. Let me know what you think if you make it!

New Open Mic at the Station Pub Warrington Street Ashton-u-Lyne. This is a monthly event on a Saturday Night ‘cos I’m too knackered to do any in the week! But we’re wanting funky, quirky, alternative dudes to strut their stuff. Everyone is very welcome. Check out http://www.myspace.com/christinaacoustic for dates.
Next one is 8th December 2007.

I’ve been drumming for years and am desperate for somewhere to jamm with other musicians in Manchester, does anyone have any suggestions for the best place to go?

  • 76. Tom  |  January 6th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

    Hey Emma,

Jam nights.. haven’t been to any in Manchester for quite a while… there used to be a great one at Arch but that place is no more, sadly :-( I’ll let you know if I find any!

    Tom

  • 77. Tom  |  January 6th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

… Just realised, you didn’t leave any email address, but if you’re interested in other drumming-related things drop me another message, coz there’s a lot of musicians in Manchester who would be probably be up for jams and things!

  • 78. ollie  |  January 9th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

hey tom! this is ollie (have met you at trof a few times on a sunday) hope you’re alright! i’m taking over the castle hotel open mic night from january 28th, we’ve got Robin Mukherjee featuring on that first monday.
It’s called “FREE CAKE! Open Mic Night @ Castle Hotel”, every Monday from 8. You should come down one night when you’re not too busy! Hopefully see you at Trof again soon, my guitar comes back fully repaired this week! Yay!

ANd Emma Derbyshire- i know 2 guys that have been dying to get a drummer for ages. decent and available drummers are like gold-dust in this town!

  • 79. Tom  |  January 10th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Hey Ollie! Good to hear from ya… sorry for the delay. For some reason your comment got moderated as spam! Yeah, I’ll be sure to pop down on a Monday soon! We too are getting involved in yet another open mic - this time at Revise Bar (Chorlton) from 3pm each Sunday… So I’ll be doing that, then rushing down to Trof in the Northern Quarter for open mic at 8pm!

Hope to see you at one of them soon…

  • 80. Helen  |  January 15th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

Like Emma, I’m looking for jam sessions, only I’m a vocalist. Shame bout Arch- that was such a funky session for a bit there. OJ’s do at the Roundhouse was great too. Where do all the RNCM and Salford Uni lot jam these days?

  • 81. Tom K  |  January 16th, 2008 at 12:49 pm

    Hi Helen,

You know, I’m not all that sure if I know of any full band sessions. A lot of guys from Salford come down to the Trof in Fallowfield open mic, but that’s open mic rather than jam session really. I’ve got two people who I think might know. I’ve emailed them both so I’ll let you know if they’ve got any ideas (they both run venues too, so I’ve suggested if they don’t know of any, maybe they should start one!)

Could you possibly do me a favour and change the phone number for the Castle listing to 07969 618357, as the number currently listed is used solely for allowing my computer to access the interweb!

    Many thanks

Wow, a comprehensive list of all the open mic nights in Manchester! How useful… I particularly enjoyed The Castle on Monday. Think I left my harmonica there…did anyone pick it up? I need that! x

  • 92. Tom Kerswill  |  June 5th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Hey, glad you enjoyed the Castle. Thanks for playing at Trof in Fallowfield on Sunday by the way - was a really great gig - thoroughly enjoyed the evening. I’m going to be giving Ollie a call at the castle in a bit anyway so will mention the harmonica!

Hey Tom, what a fantastic site. I’ve just moved to ‘The Church Inn’ on Hilton Street in Salford. I want to set up an open mic night asap and wondered if you or any of the good people on here know anybody who’d beintrested in playing. Thinking of heading up to the University but it seems there’s alreay a wealth of tallent playing on the bar scene. Any info on how to get in touch with people in the area would be great. I’ve always ran them back home (Wigan area)but usualy started nights with mates playing. None of them live in this area….
    Thaks in advance

    Hi All

I know this question was previously asked, but I’m looking for an open mic to play on Friday 5 December - in Manchester or Liverpool. Would you know of any?

We live in Dublin but will be travelling over that weekend and would love to include it in our plans…

    Thanks, Petrina

  • 96. Tom Kerswill  |  October 20th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

    Hey Petrina

Sorry - don’t know of any open mics in Manchester on a Friday… but I’ll keep looking!

Have you guys got any music you can send me? Would love to have a listen… I run some other nights here and know lots of other promoters - though not aware of anything happening that Friday at the moment :-(

    Cheers!
